The following text below features some information about my interests and activities.

My Current Employment and Affiliation

In September 2005 I joined the AIRBUS Deutschland GmbH (AIRBUS Operations GmbH in the meantime). I started my career at AIRBUS in the A380 Version Management dealing with production planning at the FAF Major Component Assembly in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.

In 2019, I changed to the Single-Aisle Programme Management (A320 Family) and joined the Integrated Business Planning team.

In between ...

... my employment at AIRBUS and my former engagement at the university I earned a little bit money with technical consulting and IT support services.

My Research at the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW)

In former times I joined the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) of the Leibniz University of Hannover. From November 1996 until March 2005 I was working as one of approx. 70 research scientist at IFW. The German name of the institute is "Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Werkzeugmaschinen". IFW is one of the leading institutes related to production engineering, which are located at the Hannover Center for Production Technologies (PZH – Produktionstechnisches Zentrum Hannover). The institute is directed by Prof. Berend Denkena, who succeeded Prof. Hans Kurt Tönshoff in 2002, and consisted at that time (status 2005) of four divisions:

➡  Production Processes (mainly cutting technology)

     ➡  Machine Tools and Controls

     ➡  Production Management

     ➡  Virtual Manufacturing

I started my research activities in 1996 in the division of Production Management, design and process planning group. In this group, I worked in the area of feature-based exchange of product data between design and process planning. In later projects I worked on cost calculation tools as well as information systems for production (e.g. workflow management systems, evaluation and roll-out of 3D-CAD systems in medium-size enterprises).

Finally, I worked from 2000 to 2005 in the area of integrated process planning and scheduling using intelligent software agent technology (research project IntaPS within DFG Priority Research Programme 1083). During this time, I started to work on a Ph.D. thesis in this area.

Furthermore, I headed the design and process planning group for 1 1/2 years. From April 2003 to December 2004, I've been head of the division of production management with 12 research scientists, 2 technical assistants (system management/network services) and about 30 students working on part time basis. Our research projects deal with basic research funded e.g. by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, German national research council) as well as with research for European research projects and industrial application sponsored by several German and international enterprises.

My Studies at the University of Hannover

The IFW is part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Leibniz University Hannover. Since the Leibniz University Hannover started as a school for engineers in the 19th century, Mechanical Engineering is one of the well known courses for students at Hannover. Especially Production Engineering as part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is one of the most important areas of research and teaching at this university.

During my studies of mechanical engineering at the Leibniz University Hannover, I earned the degree "Diplom-Ingenieur" in late 1996.

Some personal interests ...

During my studies I realised that lectures and tutorials focussing on technical aspects of engineering are only one part of an engineer's profession. Since most today's activities of an engineer are carried out e.g. by teamwork, social competencies are important, too.

Since 1995 I'm an member of the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI), the German Association of Engineers, and participated in many activities of the students branch of VDI (Students and Young Engineers, VDI-Studenten und Jungingenieure) including management and hosting of different events (e.g. annual conferences for students and young professional including recruiting workshops at the Hannover Fair) and organisational activities within VDI.

In addition, sometmes I spend parts of my spare time (but not as much as I would like) with activities like playing golf, e.g. at Wesel-Schermbeck (Golfclub Weselerwald e.V.) or Hamburg (Hamburg Golf-Lounge).
